Mexico’s highest honour for Indian academic
Mexican government on Monday honoured an Indian academician Shyama Prasad Ganguly, former professor of Spanish and Latin American Studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University(JNU) with “Orden Mexicana del Águila Azteca” (Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle) award during the “India Remembers Octavio Paz” event organised to celebrate the Mexican Nobel laureate and former ambassador to India.
Melba Pría, Ambassador of Mexico to India, presented the Order in grade, Insignia to Shyama Prasad Ganguly in New Delhi for disseminating Spanish language and Mexican culture to strengthen Mexico-India cultural
Describing him as “a pillar of this work”, Ambassador Pria said Ganguly belonged to that first generation of a handful of Indian academics who “actually made everybody else interested in Spanish”.
He has authored, edited and translated over 25 books in an academic career spanning 40 years.
